Spring 1906: |
Dr. J.K. Barrett, J.F. O’Connor, Dr. A.G.Meindl and Tim O’Connor, four Knights who
were members of Winnipeg’s Catholic Club begin working to establish a Knights of Columbus
Council in Winnipeg. A request is sent to St. Paul,Minnesota Council. After successful field
review, 97 men sign on to become members. April 28, 1906: Initiation Degree Team from
Minnesota arrives in Winnipeg to conduct the exemplification of new Winnipeg Council #1107.
September 1906: Growing interest leads to a Second Class of initiates.

1907: |
Council members Thomas Deegan, the first Grand Knight of Winnipeg Council, J.J. Callaghan, and Frank Russell spearhead expansion campaign to Calgary and Edmonton.

1907-1913: |
Expansion continues to include Fort William, Port Arthur, Regina, Prince Albert, Lethbridge, Humboldt, Weyburn, Minot, Grand Forks and Crookston.

1913: |
Council builds Columbus Hall, a downtown building with Club Rooms and Council Chambers - headquarters until 1939.

1939: |
Following Great Depression, building sold due to shrinking membership. Temporary rooms leased in downtown St. Paul’s College location.

1939-1945: |
#1107 supplied 11 of 13 Auxiliary Overseas Officers for the Knights of Columbus- Canadian Army Huts from Manitoba.

1945-1951: |
Avenue Building on Portage Ave. becomes new K. of C. home as temporary measure while establishing building fund.

1951: |
Council moves into Chan Building on Main St, remaining there until 1958.

1957: |
First Giant Bingo fundraising initiative of combined Greater Winnipeg Councils is held at Winnipeg Arena in support of St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged. Net proceeds approximately $14,000.00.

1958: |
Second Giant Bingo in Winnipeg Arena again nets approximately $14,000.00; this time for building of St. Paul’s College Chapel at the U of M. Council purchases property at corner of Donald at Wardlaw for future headquarters. Property is sold when opportunity arises for purchase of building at 212 Colony St, where Council remained until 1962.

Third Giant Bingo undertaken. Estimated $14,000 donated to St.Mary’s Academy for roof repairs.

1961/1962: |
Council #1107 embarks on one of Winnipeg’s first Newspaper Bingo campaigns. Net proceeds of approximately $100,000.00 donated toward construction of Villa Rosa.

Due to financial difficulty, 212 Colony is sold. Council relocates to Franciscan Friary until 1986. |

1980’s -1990’s: |
Many annual activities undertaken by Winnipeg Council, including Bingo at the Columbus Centennial Centre, annual Communion Breakfasts, Laymen’s Retreats, Catholic Schools Track and Field Meets and Oratorical Contests, Baseball Leagues, Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics, K. of C. Bowling League and Golf Tournaments, annual Bowling and Golf Tournaments vs. the Shriners, and Thursday weekly luncheon meetings with guest speakers. During this time, steady decline in membership due to members transferring to new Parish Councils leads to downsizing or elimination of many programs.

Council relocates to St. Vital Parish.

1987-1993: |
Another move; this time to St. Edwards.
|

1993: |
Council moves to St.Mark’s, planned as the new Parish for Linden Woods and Whyte Ridge, holding meetings at parish property at 111 Bessboro Ave. Motion passed to rename it “Winnipeg (St.Mark’s) Council #1107”, making it a Parish based Council.With membership over 80% beyond Parish boundaries, the Council experiences a decline in participation.

With St. Mark’s Parish plans put on hold, Council #1107 once again faces the loss of their Parish base. Council Chaplain, Reverend Michael Koryluk re-assigned to St. John Brebeuf. Council #1107 invited to relocate there.

October, 1995: |
Council re-named Winnipeg (St. John Brebeuf) Council #1107, and begins new era of growth and service.

1995-Present: |
Council #1107 is an integral supporter of the SJB Community, providing ongoing fundraising and liturgical support for Church and School.

Council expands St. John Brebeuf Bursary Fund, providing financial support for families seeking a quality Catholic education at St. John Brebeuf School | |
